Podcast Marketing – SEO Tips for Building Website Traffic - Vcreate

Podcasting is an incredibly effective way of building a brand. At VCreate, we have worked with more than 50 different podcast creators for a variety of services ranging from show notes creation to SEO.

While, while you can build viewers and generate backlinks with a podcast, it is incredibly difficult to generate site traffic using this strategy. SEO-wise, a podcast can never be as effective as long-form content like blog posts and guides. Why so?

To rank on page 1 and get some good organic traffic, you need to topple the top ranking posts. Typically, the top-ranking posts range from 800-2000 words. And, it is incredibly difficult for even an hour-long show to outrank a 2,000 word blog post. Why is that? It’s simple. Google and other search engines cannot “read” an audio file (at least for now).

Today, we share 3 Simple but extremely Effective podcast marketing tips that will help you overcome this hurdle, and pull in some organic traffic for your podcast show:

Structured Markup for Effective Podcast Marketing

So, if search engines cannot read “audio files”, how will they learn what your content is about? Sure, you are adding in a keyword rich title, meta-description and tags. But what if you could do something more to increase your visibility? This is where structured mark-up comes in.

Structured markup is nothing but tags that you assign to the audio file which helps search engines discover your audio content. As of now, the use of structured markup for audio file is still in incipient stages. Support for structured data for podcasts on Chrome and Android is coming soon.

In fact, if you are a Blubrry user, you can access the PowerPress SEO plugin via which you can add structured markup to both audios and videos. However, as far as plugins for videos are concerned, there are far better options available to you. Email us at support@seobusinessagency.com to learn more about structured markup for videos.

Are You Adding In Transcripts in the Correct Manner?

Okay. This is an obvious one, and this is something that a lot of podcasters are doing, albeit wrongly. A typical podcast show is 20-minutes long and contains 5-10 minutes of fluff and promotional content. Many podcasters are prone to adding in the entire transcript from start to finish. This drives your optimization out of whack and you end up ranking for the wrong keyword altogether.

At VCreate, this is a problem that we often deal with. So, should you refrain from adding in your transcript altogether? Not at all. Rather, we recommend adding in truncated and focused transcripts.

Delete all the non-related fluff and keep on making minor edits till you get the “green” dot in Yoast. This means that your content is well-optimized and you have a good chance of ranking for your targeted keyword.

Shownotes – An Extremely Effective Podcast Marketing Tool

So, we recommend adding in shownotes as well as transcripts. Shownotes are incredibly powerful for SEO as well as for readability. A listener is far more likely to check out your show if you include a well-written summary and timestamps.
